Stones larger than two centimetres and staghorn stones are not treated by extracorporeal lithotripsy. A kidney mass, today often found by chance on ultrasound, can in many cases be treated by laparoscopic surgery that preserves the healthy part of the kidney (partial nephrectomy), with less pain and a shorter recovery than open surgery. Flank pain with fever, recurrent infections or hydronephrosis (a swollen kidney) on ultrasound usually point to an obstruction in the urinary tract: a stone, a narrowing where the ureter joins the renal pelvis, or a urethral stricture. Relieving the obstruction endoscopically or laparoscopically saves the kidney from permanent damage.
